Welcome to the Division for Academic Excellence (DAE) website. The Division is comprised of three teams responsible for programs and services having a direct impact on classrooms and, ultimately, on students. The services provided relate to general or regular education and include consultation with parents, administrators, teachers, lay public, and legislators about the development and implementation of academic standards and curriculum in a variety of subject areas, teacher preparation and licensing, professional development, career and lifework education, advanced placement, alternative education, and virtual schools. The division also administers state and federal funds supporting activities related to increased student achievement.

Content and Learning (CAL)
The mission of the Content and Learning Team is to enhance the scope and quality of teaching and learning in Wisconsin schools through leadership, innovation, collaboration, communication, and service.

Key strategies for accomplishing this mission include:
  • Effective professional development for school personnel, organizations, and agencies.
  • Leadership in development and dissemination of curriculum standards and resources.
  • Advocacy on behalf of effective local, state, and federal policies and practices in the content areas.
  • Collaboration to utilize current technologies and data for educational improvement.
  • Identification and dissemination of best educational practices.
  • Leadership to embrace diversity and a global perspective in education.
  • Securing and managing specialized funding to support local initiatives.
Career and Technical Education (CTE)
Career and Technical Education focuses on exploration of the self in relation to the world of work. Students discover their interests, talents, abilities, and the niches where their talents and abilities might best be used. CTE also equips students with research skills to enable them to form a realistic picture of job opportunities. In essence, Career and Technical Education brings greater satisfaction and relevance to career choices.

CTE better prepares students for all post-high school opportunities. Whether moving on to further education, training or employment, every Wisconsin student moves through curriculum-based career awareness, exploration, planning and preparation leading to a realistic individualized career plan which is compatible with the student's abilities, aptitudes and interests.

Teacher Education, Professional Development and Licensing (TEPDL)
The mission of the Teacher Education, Professional Development and Licensing Team is to serve and support the Wisconsin education community in meeting Wisconsin statutory and code requirements to ensure that there are high quality educators and strong leadership in every school. Strategies used to accomplish this mission include:
  • Align teacher education, professional development programs, program approval and licensing to all components of PI 34.
  • Work to ensure that all Wisconsin educators are highly qualified licensed staff who have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, dispositions and performances that substantiate competence in the standards.
  • Coordinate and provide leadership in the program approval process for all institutions of higher education in the state offering programs that prepare educators.
  • Provide for continued professional growth among all educators using the licensing process for Initial, Professional, and Master Educators.
